Komentar pošiljateljaThese are handmade subtitles to fit the six books fanedit of Peter Jackson's Trilogy edited by Kerr on fanedit.org
Faneditor Name: Kerr
Book I The Return of the Shadow
Fanedit Release Date: January 2009
Fanedit Running Time: 65
The first of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien, this covers the first half of “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
For Book I, that chiefly involved removing the prologue and the Saruman subplot, as well as to end the edit at the fords of Bruinen.
Changes:
- There is no prologue. Like in the book, this edit begins on a less serious note (Bilbo’s party etc.), and only later do we learn the importance of the Ring. Parts of the prologue have been inserted elsewhere, which I’ll point out when we get there.
- New title sequence. Just to give the edit a unique feel, really. Before the company credits and film title (which has been changed to “J.R.R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings”), Christopher Lee recites the Ring Verse.
- “Book I : The Return of the Shadow” title added over Frodo reading in the forest.
- Gandalf’s ride through Hobbiton has been reworked to remove Bilbo’s narration and include some shots from the theatrical version. Just because I preferred the theatrical version — it gives a better introduction to both Gandalf and Frodo, and Bilbo’s narration that replaced those scenes in the EE is really quite pointless. In order to make this work, a continuity issue arises: After they ride over the bridge, they are seen riding through the fields (which replaces a shot from the theatrical that was used in an earlier scene in the EE), then in the next shot they are riding through the marketplace seen to be on the other side of the bridge. I don’t consider it that big a deal, though, since the continuity of that sequence was rather murky to begin with.
- Bilbo is not seen panicking over having “lost” the ring. As in the book, the importance of the ring is not emphasized until after the party.
- As Gandalf reads Isildur’s account, the Battle of the Last Alliance from the prologue is seen, unnarrated. In order to remove the narration, the sequence has been shortened slightly.
- Removed the shot of the Black Rider on the hilltop after Frodo and Sam see the wood-elves. Frodo and Sam don’t know as of yet that they are being hunted. In order to follow the book, neither should the audience.
- Removed all the Isengard sequences. As in the book, that encounter is retold in Book II, and we have no idea of what’s happened to Gandalf until then.
- Merry doesn’t distract the Black Rider with the bag of vegetables. Both because it’s not in the book, and (mostly) because I find it silly.
- The Hobbits do not encounter a Black Rider on their way to the ferry. The Riders are heard, but not seen until one comes chasing after Frodo as he runs to the ferry. To make the Black Riders more frightening and less incompetent. Also, not in the book.
- Shots of “scary” inhabitants of Bree have been cut. Peter Jackson seems to think that Bree should be a frightening place, but it wasn’t in the book, so I’ve tried to make it a bit less ominous.
- The Inn of the Prancing Pony has been recolored. Originally, it was tinted with a sickly yellow. I’ve made it a bit warmer to make the inn seem more pleasant.
- Shots of “scary” people at the inn have been cut. Again, to make Bree a little less ominous.
- Cut Sauron’s line “I see you!”. Not in the book. In fact, in the book, the Eye is not even aware of Frodo until Amon Hen, and doesn’t “see” him until he claims the ring at the Cracks of Doom. In PJ’s movies, it seems that Sauron discovers Frodo all the time, which undermines his role as a villain. So in this edit, he just says to Frodo that he “cannot hide”, but without discovering his exact location.
- Removed shots of sleeping Hobbits that were intercut with the Black Riders. A cheap and unnecessary way to heighten tension.
- Arwen doesn’t catch Aragorn off his guard. To lessen Arwen’s importance and make her seem lees like Xena the Warrior Princess and more like the elf maiden she’s supposed to be.
- Added subtitles for “Frodo fir” (“Frodo is dying.”) and “Be iest lin” (“As you wish”).
- Cut Sam’s lines “What are you doing!? Those wraiths are still out there!”. To quote faneditforum-member spelledaren, “Why is Sam so stupid?”
- Cut the Witch-King’s “Give up the Halfling, she-elf!” and Arwen’s “If you want him, come and claim him!”. Again, I feel it makes Arwen too much of an action-heroine.
- Arwen doesn’t summon the flood at the ford. Both to lessen Arwen’s importance, and because it’s not in the book where it was Elrond and Gandalf who summoned the flood.
- Cut Arwen’s line “What grace is given me, let it pass to him”. Both to lessen her importance, and because I haven’t the slightest clue what it’s supposed to mean.
- As Arwen cradles the unconscious Frodo in her arms, we fade to “End of Book I”. Like the book, this edit ends with Frodo falling unconscious at the fords of Bruinen.
The new version of Book I is finished and uploaded. The following changes have been made from the first DVD release:
- The title sequence has been changed to match the style used for Books V and VI
- Gandalf’s line about the “long-expected party” has been cut to allow for a smoother audio transition
- Cut some of Bilbo’s speech, going directly from “I don’t know half of you half as well as I should like, and like less than half of you half as well as you deserve” (or however that line goes…) to “I regret to announce this is the end”, without the mumbling in-between
- The Last Alliance flashback has been extended to include the establishing shot of the marching armies and a shot of Elendil wielding Narsil
- Shots of the Wood Elves have been flipped to fix a continuity error
- Cut Pippin’s “Oh, that was close” and Merry’s bit with the carrot after their stumble down the cliff
- Cut Frodo seeing the Eye at the inn
- Cut Aragorn throwing his torch at a Ringwraith
- Cut Sam’s line “Look Frodo, it’s Mr. Bilbo’s trolls!”
- The flight to the ford has been shortened somewhat
- Also, this release has a higher video bitrate than the first one, and the audio work has been improved throughout
Book II The Ring Goes South
Fanedit Release Date: February 2009
Fanedit Running Time: 89
The second of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien, this covers the last half of “The Fellowship of the Ring”.
For Book II, this has meant removing most of Saruman’s scenes, altering Aragorn’s character so that he accepts his destiny, inserting some flashbacks that were cut from Book I to the Rivendell scenes, trimming some unnecessary action scenes, and altering the ending.
Changes:
-New title sequence. Since this is meant to be a separate instalment, not just the missing half of the previous edit, I decided to have company credits and titles for this one as well.
- We fade in on Frodo lying in a bed in Rivendell. He asks why Gandalf didn’t meet them, and we flashback to Gandalf riding to Isengard, and thereafter see all the Isengard sequences that were cut from Book I.
- Saruman does not claim that Sauron can’t take physical form. In the book, he regained his physical form slightly before the events of the Hobbit (I think). In Tolkien’s own words: “The form that he took was that of a man of more than human stature, but not gigantic.”
- Saruman does not mention the Nine having left Minas Morgul. At this point in the story, the Ringwraiths are yesterday’s news.
- Saruman is not shown contacting Sauron through the Palantir. As in the book, Saruman is working for himself, and isn’t merely a “puppet” of Sauron.
- The brief shot of Saruman in the caverns of Isengard has been cut, since he is at the top of Orthanc in the following scene
- Saruman is not shown breeding Uruk-Hai. In the book, Saruman did undertake various orc-breeding experiments, but these were separate from the Uruk-Hai. Also, it is highly unlikely that orcs of any kind could be bred in the manner shown in the film.
- Back in Rivendell, Gandalf’s line “Saruman has crossed orcs with goblin-men.” has been cut First, Saruman isn’t breeding Uruk-Hai in these edits. Second, the line makes no sense, since “orc” is just another word for “goblin”. The line is obviously taken from a mention of “half-orcs and goblin-men” taking part in the Battle of the Hornburg, and it’s equally obvious that PJ’s interpretation is far from what Tolkien meant.
- Cut Elrond’s line “Men are weak.” I feel that Elrond is portrayed as too much of a racist, which he absolutely wasn’t in the book. There wasn’t much I could do about it, but I think removing the one line helps slightly.
- Elrond’s flashback to the Battle of the Last Alliance is followed by Isildur being ambushed and killed by orcs, with the narration removed. This seems to be the best place to include the (vital) exposition of how Isildur lost the Ring.
- Cut Elrond’s lines “He turned from that path a long time ago… He has chosen exile.” As in the book, Aragorn accepts his destiny, and is only waiting for the right time to claim his birthright.
- The Council of Elrond scene has been moved, and now immediately follows the scene with Elrond and Gandalf. I feel that revealing Strider as Isildur’s Heir works better this way, especially since I had to cut Arwen’s line which originally identified him as the heir.
- Cut Aragorn’s line “Sit down, Legolas.” As mentioned earlier, Aragorn accepts his role and destiny.
- After the council, we cut to Boromir examining the Shards of Narsil. He does not ask who Aragorn is, since they’ve already met – He just casts an awkward glance at Aragorn, which hints at the fact that he may not have been entirely sure when earlier stating that “Gondor needs no king.” This also brings his character closer to the way he was portrayed in the book, where he accepted Aragorn as the heir of Gondor.
- The scene with Aragorn and Arwen in front of Narsil has been reworked. As Aragorn puts Narsil back on its display, Arwen says “Your time will come”, which leads to her Elvish lines (“The Shadow does not yet hold sway” etc.). Thus, Aragorn’s reluctance has been removed, without having to cut the all-important line “Your time will come”, which (sort of) explains why Aragorn isn’t king already.
- Added “,Aragorn” to the end of the subtitle for Arwen’s “The Shadow does not hold sway yet” to better match what she is saying.
- Cut the scene at Gilraen’s memorial.
- Aragorn does not partake in the hobbits’ scuffle with Boromir. I think the scene is better and funnier with just Boromir and the hobbits.
- Saruman is not involved in the Caradhras scene. In the book, the avalance was caused by Caradhras itself.
- The scene with the watcher in the water has been recut to match Tolkien’s book – The Doors of Durin open, the watcher immediately attacks, tries and fails to grab Frodo, Legolas fires an arrow at it, and the fellowship retreats into the mines.
- The dead dwarves are not discovered until they reach Balin’s tomb.
- The cave troll battle has been shortened. In my opinion, it goes on for far too long, and has some silly moments that should be cut.
- Cut Frodo’s faces of pain after being stabbed by the cave troll.
- The moria orcs are not shown climbing up and down pillars. Spider-orc, spider-orc, does whatever a spider-orc can… Eh, no.
- Cut out the scene on the crumbling stair in Moria. Pointless Action-Jackson invention. I did, however, keep Gandalf telling Aragorn to lead the fellowship on, which I thought was an important line to include.
- Used the theatrical version of the fellowship entering Lothlorien, but with the approach to Caras Galadhon from the EE. The alternate EE version has several problems – Gimli’s and Legolas’ costumes and makeup are different to the ones seen in the rest of the film, and some shots of the fellowship were reused in the mirror of Galadriel. I have no idea why this obviously unfinished scene was put into the EE.
- Galadriel’s telepathy with Frodo as they enter Lorien has been cut, to make Lothlorien seem less creepy and more pleasant like in the book.
- Changed the subtitle from “Haldir of Lorien” to Haldir of LÃrien”, which is the correct spelling.
- The Lothlorien scenes have been slightly recolored to remove some of the excessively blue tint.
- Galadriel’s telepathy (“Welcome, Frodo of the Shire… One who has seen THE EYE!”) has been cut. Again, to make Lorien and Galadriel less creepy.
- Galadriel does not tell Frodo that Boromir will try to take the Ring. Boromir’s fall works better if it seems a bit less inevitable.
- All scenes in Isengard have been cut. As in the book, we do not see Saruman again until the end of Book III.
- Aragorn doesn’t tell Galadriel that he would have Arwen take a ship to Valinor. The whole Arwen subplot differs radically from the book, and has thus been removed entirely.
- The Uruk-Hai montage has been cut.
- Aragorn’s argument with Boromir has been cut.
- The Eye of Sauron is not seen hovering above Barad-Dur.
- We do not see Sam underwater – it looks too fake.
- The edit ends like the book. Frodo does not meet Aragorn before leaving, and we do not see the attack of the Uruk-Hai, which will serve as an intro for Book III. Some people may disagree with me having cut the last scene between Aragorn and Frodo, and I agree that it is a wonderful scene. It did, however, not take place in the book. Also, the scene leads directly into the Uruk-Hai ambush, which has to take place entirely at the beginning of Book III in order to follow the book – and I really wanted to follow the book’s narrative structure as closely as possible. So that’s my rationale.
As Frodo and Sam walk down into Emyn Muil, we fade to a new “credit” sequence: End of Book II.
Book III The Treason of Isengard
Fanedit Release Date: March 2009
Fanedit Running Time: 109
The third of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien, this covers the first half of “The Two Towers”.
For Book III, this has meant removing all of Frodo and Sam’s storyline from the film, adding in footage from FotR and RotK, removing most of Saruman’s scenes, change Theoden’s character to make him more noble, removing the elves from the Battle of the Hornburg, completely reinventing Treebeard’s scenes, plus lots and lots of various other changes.
Changes:
- New title sequence.
- The edit begins with Aragorn facing off against the Uruk-Hai on Amon Hen, and we see the entire fight sequence at Parth Galen (with Frodo’s appearances cut)
- “The Two Towers” title added over an overhead shot of Uruk-Hai storming down towards Boromir.
- Most shots of hobbits throwing rocks have been cut.
- Aragorn’s fight with Lurtz is shortened – Lurtz doesn’t lick his own blood off Aragorn’s dagger, nor does he pull Aragorn’s sword deeper into his own stomach.
- Removed any mention of Aragorn letting Frodo go during Boromir’s death scene – as in the book, Aragorn never encountered Frodo.
- Cut Aragorn’s line “I do not know what strength is in my blood”.
- The three hunters run into the woods, and we cut to the running montage from TTT, with “Book III – The Treason of Isengard” title added. We follow Aragorn and co., without seeing what’s going on with Merry and Pippin (yet).
- Gimli’s goofiness has ben cut throughout.
- All the scenes in Isengard have been cut.
- Cut Legolas’ “The red sun rises… Blood has been spilled this night.” It’s a good line, but too confusing, since we don’t know about the battle at this point in the edit.
- The scenes in Rohan (Eomer’s banishment etc.) have been cut. Sadly, I couldn’t get these scenes to fit anywhere. (Also, they’re not in the book.)
- The three hunters find the orc pyre, and Aragorn tracks the hobbits (shortened, and with the intercut hobbit footage removed). After Gimli’s “Fangorn… What madness drove them in there?” we jump back in time to the hobbits being carried by the Uruk-Hai. We now follow the hobbits exclusively until otherwise noted. The orcs are attacked, and the hobbits escape and meet Treebeard.
- All the Treebeard scenes have been rearranged and recut extensively to better link the various scenes.
- Several cuts made to the first Treebeard scene. Merry says that they’re hobbits earlier, and Treebeard believes him. The scene ends with “I am on nobody’s side, because nobody is on my side. Nobody cares for the woods anymore.”
- After this we cut to Treebeard saying how the trees have grown wild and dangerous The scene continues with him talking about how they lost the entwives, after which…
- …Treebeard starts to sing “The Dreams of Trees”. Just as he finishes his song (“…and say my land is best.”) we cut to…
- …the destruction caused to Fangorn by Saruman. Treebeard yells out in anger, and we cut to…
- …Treebeard talking about how Saruman once used to walk in his woods. They spot Saruman’s army marching out from Isengard, and we cut to…
- …Treebeard laying the hobbits to sleep, as he says that he has “business in the forest” etc. Cut to…
- …Treebeard and the hobbits arrive at the entmoot. “Now we must decide if the ents will go to war”, says Treebeard, and we cut to…
- …Pippin struggling not to fall asleep. “You can’t take forever!” says Merry. “Don’t be hasty”, replies Treebeard. Cut to…
- …Pippin tries to convince Merry to return to the Shire. “There won’t be a Shire,” says Merry. Cut to…
- …Treebeard turns to face them. “We have just agreed.” As in the book, the entmoot decides to fight. This line cuts to…
- …The huorns starting to move.
- The ents march for Isengard, and we cut back to Aragorn and co. searching for the hobbits in Fangorn. Again, we now follow them until otherwise noted.
- Cut Gimli’s line about squirrel droppings.
- Elvish subtitle changed from “Something’s out there” to “Aragorn, something is out there”.
- The flashback to the battle agains the balrog has been extended with the part that opens the original film.
- Shortened Gandalf’s talk about the ents waking up. Most of that information is redundant at this point.
- Shortened Gandalf and Aragorn’s nighttime talk in the plains of Rohan, to remove unnecessary dialogue and cut Gandalf calling Saruman “Sauron’s puppet”.
- Theoden is not possessed by Saruman, and Gandalf does not exorcise him. This causes a slight continuity error, since I’ve cut Gandalf casting off his cloak to reveal himself to Saruman – so in one shot, he is cloaked, and in the next he’s not, although there is enough time between the two for him to theoretically have removed his cloak.
- Final word of Eowyn’s dirge (“Bealo…”) has been cut. It sounds like the beginning of a new verse (also when seeing the translation), so the dirge works better without it.
- Shortened the scene with Gandalf and Theoden in front of Theodred’s tomb. It’s a wonderful scene, but I feel that parts of it (“No parent should have to bury their child”, Theoden crying) do not belong in Tolkien’s Middle-Earth.
- The subplot with the Rohirric children has been cut. Since I had to cut the first part of the subplot, there was little reason to keep it at all. We now cut from Theoden mourning his son to Gandalf saying “This is but a taste of the terror Saruman will unleash” (originally referring to the attack on the children’s village, now referring to Theodred’s death).
- Theoden’s line “I will not risk open war” has been cut.
- Theoden’s line “When last I looked, Theoden, not Aragorn, was king of Rohan” has been cut. As in the book, there is no tension between Theoden and Aragorn.
- Going to Helm’s Deep is not considered to be a bad idea. Although not stated explicitly, we can assume that Theoden goes to Helm’s Deep to face the enemy from a more defensible location, and not to hide as in the original
- Aragorn and Eowyn’s scene in the stables has been cut
- Gandalf does not specify the hour of his return.
- The scene where Eowyn gives stew to Aragorn has been shortened. To make it less obvious that Aragorn thinks the stew tastes awful, which is very out of character for him.
- The warg attack has been cut. Not in the book, and the “wargs” look nothing like the wargs described by Tolkien.
- The arrival at the Hornburg has been altered, so that we see Theoden, Gimli, Legolas and Aragorn arrive simultaneously with Eowyn.
- The children reuniting with their mother has been cut.
- Aragorn does not urge Theoden to send for help. Theoden should not, and does not, bear a grudge against Gondor.
- Legolas doesn’t tell Aragorn that he must sleep.
- Legolas does not despair before the battle.
- Cut Theoden’s line “How did it come to this?”
- Gimli does not try on chain mail. Stupid comedy moment. And why would he try what has to be a size XL chain mail? Besides, he was already wearing armor.
- NO ELVES AT THE BATTLE OF THE HORNBURG!
- Cut Gimli striking an orc in the groin.
- Cut the orc carrying the torch. He looks ridiculous, and I find it hard to believe that master archer Legolas was unable to bring him down. Now, it’s assumed that the orcs placing the explosives lit a fuse while they were at it.
- Cut redundant multi-angle shots of the exploding wall.
- Cut Aragorn being thrown off the wall by the explosion, since he has to stay on the wall for his next appearance.
- Cut Legolas’ shieldboarding trick.
- No dwarftossing.
- Trimmed the shot where the orc’s giant ladders are raised. In the original shot, the ladder that Legolas shoots down was to near the wall to possibly fall in the opposite direction.
- Theoden does not despair during the battle. I’ve tried to make Theoden a stronger character, like in Tolkien’s book.
- Legolas does not shoot a dead in a futile attempt to raise his “orc-slaying” score. Stupid comedy moment that doesn’t fit Legolas’ character. Also, I’m not sure if people in Middle-Earth knew what a nervous system was.
- Cut to the flooding of Isengard, and Merry and Pippin looting Saruman’s store.
- The crew rides to Isengard, and they reunite with Merry and Pippin.
- Cut Gimli’s “Salted pork…?”
- The subplot with having to discover where the final battle will take place has been removed, since it makes absolutely no sense. Gondor has two major cities – Minas Tirith and Osgiliath, one of which has been attacked already. Gandalf, and everybody else, should know what Sauron’s next move will be.
- Cut Gandalf’s reaction shot after Grima stabs Saruman. His expression doesn’t really fit, and cutting it makes Legolas react a bit faster.
- Cut Aragorn hesitating before drinking after Theoden’s “Hail the victorious dead!”
- The drinking game has been cut. Pointless comedy.
- Theoden does not doubt himself during the celebration at Edoras. Again, to make Theoden a stronger character.
- Gandalf and Aragorn’s conversation during the feast ends with Gandalf’s “Do we know that?”. I hate how PJ always tries to make Aragorn wiser than Gandalf, so I cut Aragorn’s words of consolation here.
- Pippin does not “catch a glimpse of Sauron’s plan” in the Palantir.
- Theoden does not question why Rohan should come to Gondor’s aid.
- Cut Gandalf’s line “Three days ride, as the Nazgul flies.” 1, it’s a weird thing to say, 2, Nazgul can’t fly, 3, the Nazgul’s “fell beasts” haven’t been introduced yet.
- Gandalf and Pippin ride for Minas Tirith. Fade to “End of Book III”.
Changes from the first version
- Redone title sequence
- Instead of opening on Aragorn on top of Amon Hen, we open on the Uruk-Hai assaulting Boromir
- Used the theatrical version of Boromir’s last battle
- Reinserted Boromir’s line “Frodo… Where is Frodo?”
- Cut Boromir’s line “Our people… Our people”
- Changed the transition to Boromir’s funeral boat from a straight cut to a fade
- Fixed a slight continuity error regarding Gimli’s position after the three hunters find Pippin’s “Leaf of Lorien”
- Reinserted some more of Aragorn’s tracking
- Cut the line “Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys!”
- Recut Merry and Pippin’s escape
- Reinserted Treebeard’s lines “Your part in this tale is over” etc., to make Pippin’s line about returning to the Shire more natural
- Fixed the continuity error regarding Merry’s jacket during the entmoot
- Cut the sci-fi animation after Gandalf’s “death”
- Cut Gimli’s line “You’d find more cheer in a graveyard”
- Cut Gandalf’s mumbling after Hama asks for his staff
- Cut Theoden line “Gandalf?” after his “transformation”
- Several small tweaks have been made to the Battle of the Hornburg to improve the flow
- The “dwarf-tossing” scene has been reworked
- Cut Aragorn and co.’s ride through Fangorn, so that we stay with the hobbits’ POV longer
- Used the theatrical version of the “Green Dragon” song
- Cut some of Pippin’s spasms while holding the Palantir
- Recut the scene in the stables to make the removal of some lines flow better
- Redone end “credits”
- Audio transitions have been improved throughout
Book IV The Journey of the Ringbearers
Fanedit Release Date: May 2009
Fanedit Running Time: 64
The fourth of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien, this covers the last half of “The Two Towers”.
For Book IV, this has meant separating Frodo and Sam’s journey from the rest of the story, to extend the story with scenes from “The Return of the King”, and drastically alter some key plot points, most notably Faramir taking the hobbits to Osgiliath and Frodo sending Sam home, events which did not take place in the book.
Changes:
- New title sequence
- Removed Frodo seeing the Eye in Emyn Muil.
- Cut Frodo’s line “What food have we got left?” and Sam’s reply “Well let me see… Oh yes, lovely – lembas bread! And look… More lembas bread!” Sam’s line is just odd and unnecessary, and I think the scene works better with less talk.
- The Emyn Muil scenes have been rearranged to closer match the book, so their climb down the cliff is the last event before they encounter Gollum.
- Cut Frodo’s line “We’re not alone.” With the rearranging, the line doesn’t work (Sam says later “Who’d follow us down here?”) – and the “horrid stink” most likely emanates from the Dead Marshes, not Gollum, anyway.
- Cut Sam’s line “Boats and rope and goodness knows what… It’s not natural – none of it!” Another really strange line from Sam.
- “Book IV – The Journey of the Ringbearers” title added over Gollum climbing down to the hobbits.
- Like in the book, Frodo does not fall into the CGI waters of the Dead Marshes.
- The Smeagol flashback from RotK has been inserted into the scene in the dead marshes, after Gollum says “Smeagol…” The flashback has to be somewhere, and this is the most fitting place, since it was originally intended by PJ to be included here. Only the first part of the flashback has been used, since the narration doesn’t really fit when placed here.
- Cut Deagol being dragged by a CGI fish.
- Sam does not fall off the cliff at the Black Gate, and they do not use the elven cloaks.
- The last part of the scene with Gollum catching fish in the stream has been removed. As in the book, there is no quarreling between Frodo and Sam in this edit. It now ends with Frodo’s “I have to believe he can come back”.
- Some cuts made to the hobbits being captured by the rangers to remove repetitive actions.
- Cut mention of “the fight coming to men on both fronts” from the map scene. Saruman is old news at this point, so the line is redundant.
- Some cuts made to Faramir’s interrogation of the hobbits to make him seem a bit less threatening.
- Cut Faramir’s flashbacks.
- The rangers do not beat up Gollum.
- Cut the scene where Sam urges Frodo to use the ring, both to make Faramir less of a villain, and because the scene has a grievous continuity error regarding the barrels.
- Cut Frodo looking like a drug addict/like Elijah Wood when threatened by Faramir.
- Cut Faramir’s line “The Ring will go to Gondor”. Instead, the scene cuts to…
- … Faramir’s dream/vision of Boromir’s funeral boat. Faramir holds the Horn of Gondor, sitting in deep thought. This cuts to…
- … Faramir: “Go, Frodo. Go with the goodwill of all Men.” Frodo: “Thank you.” Sam: “Captain Faramir… You have shown your quality – the very highest.” As in the book, Faramir lets the hobbits go, instead of taking them to Osgiliath. The scene has been pieced together from recolored bits of the final Osgiliath scene.
- This cuts to Gollum leading the hobbits through Ithilien. First a shot from the beginning of RotK, then the “Songs and tales” scene from TTT.
- Some cuts made to Frodo walking towards Minas Morgul.
- Cut the closeup of the Witchking, in order to keep some mystery for his big reveal in Book V.
- Several changes have been made to the Stairs of Cirith Ungol sequence. Gollum does not steal Lembas, and Frodo does not send Sam home. Instead, Gollum separates the hobbits by pushing Sam down the stairs.
- Cut Galadriel’s cameo. Not in the book, and it feels weird – I always expect her to exclaim “Now, get up!” as she extends her hand to Frodo.
- Cut Frodo’s final encounter with Gollum. Not in the book, not needed, and it makes more sense for Frodo to continue on without Sam without the Gollum-encounter, since Shelob is now still a threat.
- Cut Frodo looking like a drug addict/like Elijah Wood when stung by Shelob.
- Sam’s fight with Shelob has been shortened somewhat.
- As Frodo is taken by the orcs, we cut to “End of Book IV”.
- Frodo answers his questions more freely, and does not lie about Gollum.
Book V The War of the Ring
Fanedit Release Date: March 2010
Fanedit Running Time: 85
The fifth of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien, this covers the first half of “The Return of the King”.
For Book V, this has involved removing all of Frodo and Sam’s story from the film, as well as recutting and rearranging many of the remaining scenes.
Changes:
- The film begins with the lighting of the beacons. As the camera flies over the mountains – “The Return of the King”. As in the book, Denethor has already lit the beacons before Gandalf and Pippin reach the city.
- “Book V – The War of the Ring” title added over the final shot of the ride through Minas Tirith.
- Cut to Gandalf riding with Pippin to Minas Tirith. We follow their storyline until otherwise noted.
- Pippin does not recognize the White Tree, since he never saw it in the Palantir.
- Cut Gandalf telling Pippin not to tell Denethor anything about Boromir, Aragorn, Frodo or anything at all. Parts of this was in the book, but I feel it works better without any of it.
- Parts of the audience with Denethor has been rearranged to match the book. Pippin pledging service to Denethor now comes a bit later, and thus feels less like a spur-of-the-moment-decision. Some closeups have been cut or rearranged.
- Some small cuts made to Denethor’s and Gandalf’s dialogue. Gandalf does not ask where Gondor’s armies are, since Denethor is fully aware of the danger in this edit, having already lit the beacons.
- Cut Pippin’s “Well… Minas Tirith. Very impressive. So, where are we off to next?” and Gandalf’s reply.
- Gandalf does not start coughing when smoking on the balcony. Sure, smoking is bad for your health, but LotR is not the right place to point that out.
- The flashback to Weathertop has been cut.
- The lighting of the Minas Morgul beacon has been reworked so that we only see it from the gondorians’ point of view. Some of the dialogue preceding it has also been rearranged.
- Cut to Aragorn spotting the beacon. We now follow his storyline.
- The orcs march into Osgiliath, and we cut to Aragorn spotting the beacon. We now follow his storyline.
- Theoden does not hesitate when hearing that Gondor calls for aid, he replies immediately that “Rohan will answer”.
- Cut Theoden’s VO as the Rohirrim prepare to leave Edoras.
- Cut Gimli interrupting Aragorn’s vision of the King of the Dead.
- Removed any mention of Arwen dying. That subplot never made any sense.
- Changed the elvish subtitles to the translation used by Tolkien: “I gave hope to the DÃnedain, I have kept no hope for myself”.
- Cut Aragorn and co. sneaking off in the middle of the night.
- Cut Legolas claiming that Isildur was “the last king of Gondor”. He wasn’t.
- No Gimli goofiness in the Paths of the Dead
- The Paths of the Dead sequence has been recut to make the army of the dead less threatening. The sequence ends like in the theatrical version, with Aragorn’s “What say you?”
- Cut to the Rohirrim riding off to war.
- Cut to Osgiliath. We follow the Gondor storyline.
- The orc army crossing the river is only seen from the gondorians’ POV.
- Gothmog’s speech about the age of the orcs being at hand has been cut. I hate Gothmog as portrayed in the films.
- Cut Gandalf’s line “Foreseen, and done nothing.” In this edit, Denethor lit the beacons.
- Tried to lessen Denethor’s craziness when meeting with Faramir. Denethor doesn’t see a vision of Boromir, and doesn’t stumble down the stairs.
- Cut Pippin fumbling the words when swearing allegiance to Denethor.
- Cut Pippin kissing Denethor’s ring.
- The Witchking telling Gothmog to “Send forth all legions” has been moved to a later point. It now comes after Faramir’s charge, and is followed by all the shots of the orc army marching towards the city.
- Gothmog’s presence during the siege has been lessened. In this edit, he only appears during the Grond sequence, and has a small appearance later during the charge of the Rohirriom. All other appearances have been cut.
- Gandalf does not knock down Denethor at the siege. Why does PJ’s version of Gandalf has to be such a violent brute?
- Cut Pippin’s apperance in the siege until the “Pyre of Denethor”-storyline.
- Cut the archers firing at the towers before Gandalf tells them not to.
- The Siege of Gondor has been rearranged. After Grond is brought forth, we exclusively follow Pippin’s storyline until Denethor locks him out, after which we return to Gandalf at the gate.
- Gandalf vs. the Witch-king has been altered. The WK does not break Gandalf’s staff, and Gandalf does not fall from his horse. As in the book, they never get the chance to square off. Also, the fact that the WK defeats Gandalf the White is completely ludicrous – remember that Aragorn fought off both the Witch-king and several other Ringwraiths back in FotR.
- As the WK hears the horns of Rohan and flies off, we cut to Merry and Eowyn at the Rohirrim camp.
- Removed intercutting of orcs preparing for battle with Theoden’s speech. It makes no sense for the Rohirrim to reveal themselves to the orcs and give them lots of time to prepare for the cavalry charge, so in this edit, we do not see the orcs responding until the Rohirrim are already charging.
- Some over-the-top stuff has been cut from the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, which plays in its entirety without cutting back to Minas Tirith.
- The character of the Black Serpent, leader of the Haradrim, has been cut. Yes, he was in the book, but I didn’t really like him, and I felt the Pelennor battle had to be shortened slightly, so out he went.
- Cut the Witchkings’ “Diiiieeeee…… Noooooooow…..”. Merry now stabs him immediately after his line “No man can kill me.”
- Eowyn says farewell to Theoden immediately after slaying the WK, after which Aragorn and co. arrive.
- Legolas vs. oliphaunt has been cut.
- The battle of the Pelennor Fields is won, and we cut to Denethor pouring oil over himself and Faramir. Again, a strange timeline change, but true to the book.
- Gandalf does not employ violence against Denethor, who stays on the pyre for the entire scene (he does not run across the length of Minas Tirith just to get a visually pleasing death scene). “Thus passes Denethor, son of Ecthelion” – and we see the sun shine on Minas Tirith once more.
- Gimli does not suggest that they keep the dead around for a while longer.
- I used the theatrical version of Pippin finding Merry, which now occurs before Eomer finds Eowyn.
- Several cuts have been made to the Last Debate. Gandalf does not say that Frodo has passed from his sight (as he earlier claimed that he had “no news of Frodo”), and all of Gimli’s and Legolas’ lines have been cut.
- When Aragorn challenges Sauron in the Palantir, he does not see the floating eyeball on top of Barad-Dur, but the armored Sauron holding a Palantir (taken from later on in the scene).
- I always felt that Aragorn should win the challenge, so it ends with him presenting Anduril, backed by the Gondor theme. No visions of Arwen dying, no shattered Evenstar pendant.
- Some cuts made to the Mouth of Sauron to make him less nasty.
- Some cuts made to the pre-battle sequence – the orcs do not completely surround our heroes.
- Cut Aragorn being tempted by Sauron.
- We see the battle in front of the Black Gate without cutting to Frodo and Sam. “The eagles are coming!” shouts Pippin, and we fade out: “End of Book V”.
“To battle!” they say, and we cut to the Rohirrim arriving at Pelennor. This timeline change might seem odd, but I’m going by the book, where the beginning of Chapter 5 – The Ride of the Rohirrim takes places before the horns are heard at the end of Chapter 6. We now follow the Rohirrim without cutting back to what’s going on inside the city (which will come later, like in the book).
changes for the DVD:
– Cut Pippin’s smile on the balcony
– The Paths of the Dead sequence has been extended slightly
– Cut Faramir and co. letting some of the orcs run past them
– The transition between the two parts of the Osgiliath battle has been changed
– Shortened Gothmog’s dialogue before Grond is brought forth
– Cut shots of women and children after the city has been breached
– Removed the Merry/Eowyn scene before the Rohirrim’s arrival
– The Battle of the Pelennor Fields has been recut
– Cut the King of the Dead’s line “Release us!”
Book VI The End Of the Third Age
Fanedit Release Date: January 2010
Fanedit Running Time: 47
The final chapter of a six-part edit made to bring Peter Jackson’s adaptations of “The Lord of the Rings” as close as possible to the original book by J.R.R. Tolkien.
For Book VI, apart from only following the journey of Frodo and Sam, several small cuts have been made, including the near-removal of Sauron’s electric lighthouse-eye. The events surrounding the destruction of the Ring have also been recut, and custom credits with new music have been added to the very end of the film.
Changes:
- The edit opens like the book, with Frodo in captivity in the Tower of Cirith Ungol.
- Added some sound effects as Sam passes the statues outside the tower.
- Cut Frodo’s line “I’m so sorry Sam”, since he didn’t send Sam away in Book IV.
- Added “Book VI – The End of the Third Age” title over Sam and Frodo leaving the tower.
- Sauron the Floating Eyeball has been minimized The searchlight has also been cut as much as possible, but can still be seen, faintly, in some shots.
- Removed the shot of the orcs moving off. They move far too quickly, and the bit is not needed since we do not intercut with the rest of the Fellowship’s diversion.
- Removed some wide shots from the Mount Doom sequence. The focus here should be on the characters, not the scenery.
- Removed Sam’s “Come on!” after “… but I can carry you!”. I feel it is much more effective without the final bit.
- Sam’s fight with Gollum has been shortened, both because there’s no good way to merge the two parts of the fight, and because Sam would have received some serious injuries from the thrashing Gollum gives him. Now Sam just slices Gollum’s belly with Sting.
- The Mount Doom sequence is not intercut with the battle in front of the Black Gate.
- Added some flashes of the Eye of Sauron (from FotR) to keep Sauron’s presence in the sequence without having the electric searchlight-eye.
- Removed Sam’s line “Throw it in the fire!”
- Gollum and the Ring are destroyed immediately upon hitting the lava.
- Shortened Frodo dangling over the lava. Sam now pulls him up immidiately, without Frodo considering suicide.
- Reordered the consequences of the Ring’s destruction. Mount Doom erupts, the Nazgul are destroyed, Sam and Frodo escape from Sammath Naur and then witness the destruction of Barad-Dur.
- After Frodo’s line “I’m glad to be with you, Samwise Gamgee. Here, at the end of all things” we cut to the end of the battle in front of the Black Gate.
- Some of the fades to black or white have been removed – the remaining have been shortened.
- Gandalf’s “Now come the days of the king. May they be blessed” and Aragorn’s speech at the coronation have been cut.
- Aragorn’s reunion with Arwen has been recut. Since that story has such a small role in these edits, the original scene felt too out of place.
- The final shot of Frodo has been cut.
- New credits with new music – “Bilbo’s Last Song” from the BBC dramatization.
