"The Purple Horizon" is a war film with the largest amount of human and material resources in twentieth-century Asian cinema. It ibased on the novel of the same name by writer Văn-Quang, which shocked the literary community of the Republic of Vietnam as soon as it was released in 1964. This film brought glory to the cast, who later became famous stars in the Vietnamese arts sky : Hùng Cường (Phi), Kim Vui (Liên), Mộng Tuyền (Loan), Ánh Nga, Bảo Ân (Điền), Ngọc Đức (Phú), Hà Huyền Chi (Tân), Khả Năng, Trần Đỗ Cung (Lieutenant Colonel Lạc), Ngọc Phu (Lieutenant Minh), Bà Năm Sađéc (Phi's mother).
The film's story is limited to the year 1963, under the First Republic. Corporal Phi has a special talent for shooting machine guns. He's a cowboy soldier of sorts, but he's also the center of attention for women at officer galas and nightclubs in the capital.
Phi received the deep affection of both of his superior's daughters, Loan and Phượng. However, he is in love with a tea room singer with a dark past named Liên. Liên has an affair with a jealous playboy, Phú, and at the same time, she is always pursued by Lieutenant Minh. Out of anger at Liên's love affair with Phi, Minh abused his position to send Phi to the outpost in the hope that Phi would be killed by the Việt-Cộng.
In a place facing the enemy, Phi met his best friend again, Tân, who was also transferred because of his stubborn nature. They also got to know the young superior who was about to go to US for training, Điền. Unexpectedly, Điền is Liên's younger brother. Điền tried to mend Liên's feelings for Phi. Those two lovers had just realized that they couldn't live without each other, when the coup happened. The characters' fates are left open as the theme of the film's soundtrack.
The film won three gold awards from Vietnam's National Awards for Scholastic Art and Writing in 1971. That same year, it won the Best Artistic Expression Award from the Asian Film Festival in Taipei.
