This is 'SmallBrother', administrator of the Dutch section of OpenSubtitles.org. A while ago, the producer of the movie "Man From Earth: Holocene" came to us asking for subtitlers/translators for his new movie, a follow-up of the 2007 movie, rated 8,0 on IMDb.

This has not been an ordinary subtitling request. Instead, it's an interesting project and unique global experiment. It's the first time that a serious, established producer (but NOT from a big studio) came to us asking for help. Besides releasing the movie on DVD/Bluray and paid online channels like iTunes, Vimeo and Amazon, he had the plan to distribute the movie also through the 'piracy channels', offering the movie for free to anyone, but asking for a voluntary donation. I think this is a modern, friendly and sympathetic approach, shining a different light on copyright and piracy.

Meanwhile part of the plan has happened: the movie have been broadly spread on torrent sites and download sites, including subtitles in several languages. Some news covering on TorrentFreak:

However, still subtitles in many languages are missing, and especially for Portuguese there are a lot of requests. Would you be willing and able to make Portuguese subtitles?

Since the movie is already out in the open and some subtitles are already available, things are pretty easy. We have a raw verbatim English source file with pre-made synchronisation, anticipating other languages and considering things like cam- and scene changes, but ignoring subtitling guidelines like line length and CPS-ratio. Most of the work will be just translating, compressing and adding line breaks, maybe some splitting. Further, little messing around with technical aspects. The movie is approx. 1hr30min long and there are just under 1000 lines of text to translate and compress. If preferred, there is also a compressed English version, which is NOT verbatim, but possibly easier to use as source, considering CPS and line length issues.
