Robin e Barney si fidanzano e lei vorrebbe coinvolgere nella sua decisione anche il padre, che però non dà il consenso alle nozze. Dopo una serie di incomprensioni, tutto si sistema, ma chi fa veramente fatica a accettare che Robin sposi Barney è Ted. Nel frattempo Marshall e Lily sono messi a dura prova da Marvin che, a causa di un malessere, piange sempre. Al matrimonio di Robin, Ted farà un incontro inaspettato.
