Wel erg weinig informatie :)

Sorry, I don't understand Dutch, but I do understand the character set. I hope you speak English.
These are from Dutch subtitled commercial DVDs, PAL format, 720x576@25fps, 4x3 aspect ratio. I used the OCR feature of SubtitleEdit and have been training it and making manual corrections as I go. For example, it tends to recognize 'rw' as 'nN' so it now automatically changes 'venNerken' to 'verwerken'. It is also sometimes confused by accented characters, like ï. I fix these manually.
FWIW, I have looked all over and CANNOT find any documentation on the format of 'Release Name'. The e.g. shown on the web form is less than useful, especially for TV series. I would be happy to fill that in, if I knew how. I can also add comments like 'extracted via SubtitleEdit's tesseract OCR engine from Dutch subtitles on PAL DVD.' Would that be helpful?
What else would you like to know?

The release name is meant to identify the (or one of the) matching video files - "matching" as in being synchronized. If your subtitle was extracted from DVD, then it would be best to write something like DVDrip or so.
Anyway, S01E01 doesn't say so much :)
You can change it by using the link "Correct subtitles" and edit the field "Release name".
faginbagin @
OK. Doesn't seem that much more useful, but if that's what you recommend...
SmallBrother @
Well it IS more usefull.
First of all, s01e01 says pretty much nothing, and it's already displayed as title.
Then, typically episodes are available in many different ways, WEB-DL, WEBrip, Bluray, HDTV - and then done by various release teams, possibly resulting in different syncs. Do the math, and you will find that it might be possible to have 2x2x2x2x2x2x2 possibilities - and only ONE will match. But NOT your DVD rip. So you will save your downloaders 128 useless tries by saying it's a DVDrip.
I think that's better than "S01E01".
SmallBrother @
But thanks for changing the release name :)

FYI, I didn't fill in S01E01, that was done automatically by the web server processing the upload submission. The time we have spent on this comments exchange could have been avoided if 'Release Name' were documented somewhere. Before I uploaded the first file, I tried, for a couple of hours, searching the forum, googling, reading the API documentation, etc. I found nothing useful, no mention of terms like DVDrip, WEBrip, etc. So, I left it blank. None of the check boxes applied, so I didn't check them. I knew the frame rate, so I filled that in. I want to contribute, but my first attempt has been frustrating.
SmallBrother @
You are right, "release name" is not very clear.
In fact, there is quite some extensive info on the forum about how to upload, including "release name", but.... it's in Dutch :-/ - see forum.opensubtitles.org/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=14239
And yes, the S01E01 was done automatically, it is parsed using the subtitle file name.
Don't get me wrong, I understand you did your best, nobody is expected to know everything on day 1. I am sorry if I may have sounded unpleasant.
Back to "release name", in short this is the file name of the video file your subtitle is synchronized to. If that doesn't apply, like in this case, just any kind of description to 'identify' will do.
faginbagin @
No, you did not sound unpleasant. I guess I was feeling defensive after I had honestly tried to figure out how to provide the info requested in the upload form.
SmallBrother @
It's not the first time I see confusion about the terminology "release name". Maybe we should change that input field to "video file name" or "movie file name". After all, only very few people do deep research to find out what it's supposed to mean...
faginbagin @
In my case, changing the field's name to "... file name" would not help, because there is no useful file name when the source is an optical disk. What would help, is a "How To", in English. If there had been a pop-up paragraph on the web form, that would have been great. But a sticky post on the English forum, like your Dutch version, would also have helped.
SmallBrother @
Yes, some kind of pop-up with more explanation in the upload form would be very good. I thought of that, but it has to be made - by someone else and amongst a zillion of other things and obviously in more than one or two languages. More or less the same for a forum topic. Unfortunately a day only has 24 hours :)
So I am afraid this is all I can do for now. Thanks for the feedback (and the subs).
