## General
This README file serves as further documentation for the English
translation of all eight episodes of Studio Julmahuvi. I didn't want to fill the subtitles with translator's
notes that would clutter the screen and hinder viewing experience, so I saw this as a better way.
My intention was to provide a good translation that is not too pedantic.
Certain creative decisions were taken when it was fitting. This translation may see further
revisions with small fixes. Subtitles taken from the series' DVD release and [Yle Areena](areena.yle.fi/1-4422731) were used for help. For the "Z Lightning Patrol" sketches, fan-made scripts found from the long-defunct [Julmahuvi Fansite](web.archive.org/web/20150712093924/http://www.julmahuvi.net/index.php?P=huone222) were used.
The English translation covers only foreign languages. Therefore English sketches such as "The Pillow of Darkness" or "Practical English Abu" are not subtitled. Similarly the English dialog in "The Last Wanderers" is not subtitled.
Several songs have their lyrics translated when it's fitting, such as the Finnish version of Jimi Hendrix's "Fire" (for comedic effect) or Paul Anka's "(You're) Having My Baby" (obvious Finnish version of the original). Specific foreign parts that were not translated were for example Stig Carpelan's obvious nonsense and Alfonso's voiceover.
## Miscellaneous notes
- The swear word "perkele" means "evil spirit" and is equivalent to "god damn". As the word has its own identity similarly to foreign swear words "kurwa" or "cyka blyat", I decided not to translate the word. I felt translating would take its power away.
- The Pashaist chant "willow switch" ("virvon varvon") in episode 5 has its translation based on Juha Vuorinen's novel _Totally Smashed_.
- In episode 2's "Z Lightning Patrol", the heated dialogue between Rauski and a hippie overlaps. Both of their lines are there for comedic effect.
- When Stig Carpelan is interviewed, his lines don't correspond with subtitles, which is obvious. Originally in these segments there were Finnish subtitles in place, and I decided to retain and translate them for comedic effect.
- Touko-Pouko, the host of "Kiddy Phone", has a way of rhyming-phyming words even if they don't really rhyme.
- The Finnish word for "accordion" is also slang for "ass".
- The "Here's the First" song ("Helan går") has its translation based on English Wikipedia.
