ב"קנזס סיטי" חוזר אלטמן אל העיר בה נולד ב-1925, ויוצר עלילה "אלטמנית" טיפוסית עם שפע של דמויות ועלילות משנה, שלא נעדר ממנה גם היחס המריר אל הצביעות האמריקאית. למוסיקת הג'אז בסרט יש תפקיד מהותי, ולאימפרוביזציה שמאפיינת את הסרט יש קשר הדוק עם רוח הג'אז השורה עליו. בפסקול (וגם לפני המצלמה) מנגנים ניקולס פייטון, ג'ושוע רדמן, מרק וויטפילד, כריסטיאן מקברייד, סיירוס צ'סטנאט ורון קרטר.
