I stick mostly to Chinese subtitles. Feel free to vote for the subtitles I upload if you want. It's kind of pointless though given that there usually aren't multiple subtitles to choose from for each movie. It would be more useful to post a comment about what you think is wrong with the subtitles, or offer some help in correcting them. I don't make any of these subtitles. All thanks should go to the groups and individuals who dedicate their time and energy to actually making these subtitles. I'm simply a grunt who helps to sync, then upload them. I've got a lot more Chinese subtitles to upload but I'm not doing that until I guarantee they're syncronised to a video file. Non-geek/tech people are pretty much unable to sync subtitles in my experience so uploading them only becomes useful when I can guarantee there's at least one release out there that they work with. I wonder if anyone will ever read this?

I've tried downloading several of the chinese subtitles you've posted but they all come up as unreadable gibberish. I have support for Asian language installed in my Windows and when I am browsing chinese/japanese websites, the characters shows up just fine. The only problem I have is that the subtitles I try to download does not show up as chinese at all, just random gibberish. Got any advice for me?

This is an easy-ish problem to solve, but the solution will vary depending on what program you use to play your videos. I'll give you the most likely solution and if that doesn't work then i'll need a bit more information to help you. The problem occurs because Windows cannot guess what language a set of subtitles is in, it must be told. All the traditional Chinese subtitles I upload are encoded in a system know as BIG5, while all the simplified Chinese subtitles I upload are encoded in GB2312. To avoid them coming up as giberish you just need to know how to set the subtitles to BIG5 or GB2312. The most common way to play subtitles is through the DirectVobSub plugin, so this is what i'll give you instructions for. If you're using DirectVobSub each time you play a video that has subtitles a green arrow will appear in your system tray (down by the clock). It will only appear after you start playing the video. Double click on this green arrow. A properties box will appear. Below 'Text Settings' on the main tab you'll see a button with the name of the font you are using to display subtitles on it (in the picture below it says 'Ariel Unicode MS'). You need to click on this button. You can change the font you're using (make sure you choose one that has Chinese characters), the color, the size etc. Most importantly you can change the character encoding in the 'Script' dropdown box. If you want to use traditional Chinese characters set it to 'CHINESE_BIG5'. If you want to use simplified Chinese characters set it to 'CHINESE_GB2312'. DirectVobSub will remember whatever you set it to so you only need to change it if you want to use subtitles for a different language. Hope this helps. If it doesn't i'll need to know a little more about what media player you're using etc to help you.

Thank you for your reply. I am using VLAN media player to play my movies. I am not sure what you mean with 'DirectVobSub'. Can I use VLAN Media Player to view these subtitles?

VLAN Media Player (VLC) is a good player, unfortunatley it's not good at handling srt based subtitle files. I suggest you switch to Media Player Classic, it's free and handles srt files perfectly (there's a link in the software section of this site to get it). In Media Player Classic it's as easy as going View -> Options -> Subtitles -> Default Style. You can select the font you want to use (one that has Chinese) and just below it the character encoding (ChineseBig5 for Tradiitonal or GB2312 for Simplified).

I have Media Player Classic but then another problem presents itself; codecs! If I try to launch a movie it says it needs a certain codec and then I have to go on a neverending hunt for codecs online only to end up with something that is not codec but 500 worms and trojans instead.

www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ all the codecs you'll ever need. I'd suggest just getting k-lite codec pack, it's got basically everything you'd ever need.

Thanks for the link to the codec website. I am trying the method that you told me of with the green arrow, but it works like only 5% of the time. The rest of the time it just shows gibberish. Also, the few font types I have are with simplified chinese, any idea where to get traditional chinese?

Nevermind! Apparently it shows both in traditional and simplified! I also found it easier to change the subtitle options inside the media player. The green arrow does seem a bit argumentative at times. Thank you very much for your help! My friend was very happy about being able to get chinese subtitles for her english movies! By the way, I must ask; your location says that you're from Taiwan. Are you really taiwanese?

Hey hoodric thanks for all the subs. All my students really appreciate it. But can you please, please, please do subs for 1CD releases too. I have so many axxo movies but can't find 1CD subs in Chinese, unless you can tell me how to turn 2CD subs and use them on a 1CD release. Thanks again!

I only upload subs that are linked to specific files. I use the original "scene" releases because axxo's releases are lower quality. Axxo is a ?person/group? who takes the original scene release and (usually) lowers the quality to make it the size of one CD. This may be by downmixing surround sound to stereo, lowering the video bitrate or the resolution etc. The length and framerate of axxo releases is usually the same as the original though so simply joining the 2CD subs for a scene release together should give you working subtitles for an axxo 1CD release. Joining subtitles is easy, use subtitleworkshop from urusoft. It's freeware and joining them is easy. Google should lead you to a tutorial on how to do it.
