Frequently asked questions

I received mail, but I can not read it, it is full of mess. What to do? ^
This is caused, your email client is old, and can not decode properly base64 UTF8 encoded mails. Solutions for this problem are - change your email client for better one, or change website language to english and mail will be send as ASCII text file, so you will have no problems with reading.
How to get notification about new subtitles by e-mail or RSS? ^
If you want to be notified about new/requested subtitles at your e-mail address, you have to be logged in. Go to the Search page, select the subtitle languages you are interested in, and press Search. Search results will be displayed. At the bottom of the page you can see icons, click on the RSS/MAIL RESULTS icon and you are subscribed. In every notification e-mail there is a link for unsubscribing. You can customise the notification frequency in your profile, it is daily by default. You can setup your own search criteria (for example: get results for all English subtitles for movie rating > 7 and 'action' as genre) and subscribe to notification about it.
I did register, but did not receive any confirmation e-mail, what to do? ^
The problem is not on our side. Perhaps you are using a free mailbox provider (like hotmail.com, yahoo.com, etc.) that blocks our confirmation e-mails mistaking them for spam. Solution: use another e-mail provider. If you really think something is broken just contact us as always.
I want to search for subtitles in more than one language, is it possible? ^
Yes, it is. All you have to do is registering at our site. After you log in, you can select as many languages as you want in your user profile. From then on you can select that particular language set in the drop-down menu at the search page. Enjoy! :)
Tell me why you choose the domain name opensubtitles.org, what does it mean? ^
OPEN means this site is "open". You can get every page as XML (just add "/xml" at end of the URL), that implies all features and contents are suitable for easy parsing. This can be used in many ways (synchronization with other sites, communication with external software...). Just be sure CONTACT US before doing so.
SUBTITLES means subtitles for all kinds of videos (movies, TV serials...)
What technology is used on your site? ^
This site is optimized for modern browsers, like Chrome, FireFox, Safari, Opera and so on. It should also work in Internet Explorer, but we do not specifically support it. The site uses XHTML, CSS, XSLT, AJAX and so on. It is programmed in PHP, some scripts are in Perl, we use Lighttpd as our web server and FreeBSD as the operating system. For database we choose MySQL, for fulltext searching Sphinxsearch. For caching is used memcache, redis and MongoDB, for code optimalizations APC. Do you want to know more? Feel free to contact us.
Why should I register on your site? ^
We realise you do not like registration (neither do we:). But registration is free, and we request just a few basic information like Username, Password and a working E-mail address. Here are some benefits you get on registering:
- access to multisearch (searching for many different subtitles at one time)
- you can post comments, vote for subtitles, edit subtitles...
- you can receive new subtitles (or periodic search results) by e-mail
- you can post to the subtitle request and subtitles in progress pages
- and many-many more...
Please consider registering ASAP, while your nick is still free :)
Does your site implement antileech protection? ^
Yes. Explanation - even if we are OpenSubtitles, leeching is forbidden. If you want to download more subtitles for any reason, just contact us, write what you want and why and we will see. This antileech protection is good for regular users, server is responding faster. Please do not try running any download bots on our site. Thanks.
Limit is: 1 IP/max 200 subtitles/24 hours. Don't try steal subtitles, your IP will be banned.

Why you do not support format IDX+SUB ? Because it is very big (few MB) and also completely illegal. Read more about subtitle formats at SubLib DOCs
I want change UserName, it is possible? ^
Yes, in certain cases we allow that, just contact us with old username and new username.
What means Subtitles for Hearing Impaired? ^
Hearing impaired subtitles have the sounds noted in the subtitles that a normal hearing person can hear. For example, if the phone rings the notation (phone rings) is included in the subtitles. Those persons that are not hearing impaired do not want the notations there for the sounds they can hear anyway, but hearing impaired persons need them to understand what is going on in the movie.
